      Amazon.com Review

Are you ready to become a Junior Ranger? In Fisher-Price Outdoor Adventures Ranger Trail, Ranger Rudy takes players to Camp Wonderoo for a handful of nature-related activities. Paint on the wall of a cave, race sailboats through a pristine river, stargaze, mix and match animal sounds at night, or gather around a campfire and sing songs with the other campers. Along the way, you can earn merit badges and collect plants and animals in a virtual scavenger hunt.

Aimed at gamers in the ages 4 to 7 range, Ranger Trail is, unfortunately, a program that fails on almost every level. Its educational content is simplistic and lags far behind that offered in other children's games. Most of its activities are standardized offerings players will have seen elsewhere--the paint program, for example--and the few that look like they might present an interesting challenge are too tough. They require reading and computer skills that will frustrate their targeted age group. Worst of all, the Wonderoo characters are dull, chirping their way through listless animations while their attempts at humor fall flat.

Additionally, Ranger Trail is loaded with long animations that can't be skipped and unfortunately make up the vast majority of the game's content. An extremely passive child might enjoy a game whose primary rhythm entails triggering five minutes of viewing after a few seconds of interaction; most, though, will wonder why they aren't just watching television.

The idea of taking players on an interactive camping trip is a fine one, but Ranger Trail really misses the mark. --Alyx Dellamonica

      Amazon.com Product Description

With Ranger Rudy as their guide, children are encouraged to explore the great outdoors and play seven trailblazing activities at Camp Wonderoo. Players make a new discovery at every bend of the trail as they uncover and learn about more than 60 wildlife animals, plants, rocks, fossils, and more. With activities from stargazing to boat racing, creating cave paintings to singing around the campfire, children will gain a new respect for their environment without ever setting foot outside, and complete activities, earn badges, and search for examples of wildlife at Ranger Rudy's request. Once they find all the items listed on Ranger Rudy's clipboard, players are invited to test their knowledge at the Nature Match Game and ultimately earn their Junior Ranger Patch and recognition as an Official Camp Wonderoo Junior Ranger.

1.0 out of 5 stars Boring,my nephew almost went to sleep, September 3, 2001

I bought this for my nephew who is seven. He almost fell asleep watching this.Because thats basically all you do.You sit and watch these animal talk all throught the game.Kids get to click on bushes to see animal run past,or to look under rocks for the things on a list they are given.Thats rare in the game when the kids get a chance to actually do something. If your kids can sit through almost ten minutes of dialog in the beginning then this is for them.If they are like most kids and want to get into the game right away, this is not the game for them....

not a very good game. kids will be bored and the old i wanna another game speech will come. i dont hate it im just saying it could have more options and more play to it. im 10 so im outgrown from this game but when i play with my brother he dosnt seem entertained and he goes crying to mom and saying i want this or i want that so im stuck playing it.if you want a game that your child will sit and play then let me suggest fisher price dollhouse or fisher price pet shop. if you want the outdoors and outdoor animals then ACUALLY go there and see it instead buying it through a one-day-worth game.

This terrific software teaches about outdoor animals and activities, and is very entertaining while doing it. It's a great gift to the child that is overloaded with all of the techno-junk bombarding kids these days ... give a child a different perspective and give them this super software!
