Four very different games come in one entertaining package in Games Just for Girls, a bundle of fun for girls just beginning to use computers. Become a princess on a romantic quest, run your own pet shop, or dress a paper doll in Navaho garments--the choices are pleasingly wide.
Crayola Magic Wardrobe is a paper-doll package, ideal for girls who enjoy choosing color schemes for various garments, or who like to have a printed result of their gaming in hand. Animal lovers will be captivated by both Fisher Price Pet Shop and My Little Pony, in which they can groom, feed, and nurture friendly creatures to their hearts' content. Rounding out the set is Barbie Magic Fairy Tales, a simple role-playing game that gives players a chance to become Rapunzel and solve simple puzzles as they seek to lift a curse placed on a prince by a wicked witch.
Which of the four games will users prefer? Though largely a matter of taste, My Little Pony is the most flexible of the quartet. Kids must work hard to keep their pony healthy and happy; if the horse is doing well, it can participate in jumping competitions. Players can also bake special meals for the ponies and play games such as tic-tac-hoof.
In contrast, the other three game choices offer narrower delights. Crayola Magic Wardrobe lets players dress dolls in clothes from a range of historical periods, but it doesn't permit any mixing of eras. Pet Shop, though it lets kids wash and groom the creatures in the store, is set up so that players can only choose pets' accessories--they have no control over the animal's actual look.
Though focused primarily on entertainment, the Games Just for Girls set does include some educational content--easy matching contests, historical information, and memory challenges. Intended for 3- to 7-year-old users, the included programs lack the graphics and general sophistication of software designed for older players. However, the scope of the games makes this a perfect choice for families with two or more young girls. I just reasently bought this game for my cousin and she loves it. Everyday she thanks me for buying it. I'm glad I could give her something she enjoys. My 5 and 7 year old girls enjoy playing with the CDs. My Little Pony and Pet Shop are the favorites. Beware ... except for magic wardrobe, the games run very slowly.
